Swiss health insurance 2027: the deadlines for your insurer and deductible

Published · Lire en français

Every autumn, Swiss health insurers announce the next year’s premiums. That announcement opens a short window in which the law lets you leave your insurer or change your deductible (franchise) for 1 January. Here are the dates that apply to basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG) for 2027, and what they do not cover.

The calendar at a glance

  • End of September 2026: the Federal Office of Public Health publishes every insurer’s 2027 premiums on priminfo.admin.ch.
  • 31 October 2026: the last day for your insurer to tell you your new premium.
  • 30 November 2026: the last day for your notice on basic insurance, or a request for a lower deductible, to reach your insurer.
  • 31 December 2026: the last day to ask for a higher deductible from 1 January.
  • 1 January 2027: new premiums and changes take effect.

The 30 November deadline

When your premium changes, the law lets you leave your insurer at the end of the month before the new premium applies, with one month’s notice. In practice, your letter must be received by the insurer no later than Monday 30 November 2026. The posting date does not count: a registered letter sent on the 29th may arrive too late.

A few rules worth knowing:

  • For basic insurance, an insurer must accept anyone living in its area, with no health questionnaire.
  • Your old cover only ends once the new insurer has confirmed yours, so there is no gap in basic insurance.
  • If you have unpaid premiums under debt collection, you cannot leave your insurer until the debt is settled.

Your deductible: two different deadlines

The deductible is the amount you pay yourself each year before the insurer reimburses. Adults choose between CHF 300, 500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500; children between CHF 0 and 600. Above it, a 10% co-payment applies, capped at CHF 700 a year for adults.

  • Raising your deductible: possible every year from 1 January, if your request arrives before 31 December.
  • Lowering your deductible: your request must arrive by 30 November, like a notice to leave.

A higher deductible lowers the premium but raises what you pay when you need care. The right level depends on your own health spending: it is a personal trade-off that only you can make.

What this calendar does not cover

Supplementary insurance (private hospital ward, alternative medicine, dental care…) falls under its own contract (LCA/VVG). Its notice periods are set by the policy terms, and a new insurer may decline an application or add exclusions after a health questionnaire. Basic and supplementary cover can sit with two different insurers; ending one does not end the other.

What to check in your own documents

  • Your 2027 premium, in the letter your insurer sent in October.
  • The deductible and insurance model on your current policy.
  • The terms of any supplementary cover: notice period, minimum contract length.
  • Any discount tied to an alternative model, and the duties that come with it (seeing your family doctor first, calling a telemedicine line…).

These rules come from the Federal Health Insurance Act; only your policy and your insurer are authoritative for your situation.

What do your own policies say?

Couverture finds your insurance contracts in your mailbox, read-only, and shows their cover, their renewal dates and where they overlap. It describes what your documents say; only your insurer can confirm a claim.
